Southbound - First Day Out - underway Newport to Tortola

Captain's Log:

It's midnight on the first day and I just relieved Scott from his first solo watch of the trip.

He's awesome. He's as good standing watch on the boat as he is diving under the boat (in 50 degree water no less). The fact is that all four of us (that includes Zen of course) are doing well so far.

John and I flipped for the 12:00 to 3:00 and I lost. Not sure he did much better with the 3:00 to 6:00 but we are slipping into a good watch keeping groove :)

We had a great dinner of jambalaya. Monique worked for several days preparing meals for the delivery. The only problem with food is choosing which outstanding meal we are going to eat next. Kathi will be happy to know that there is a constant munch of cookies and brownies!! No need to wait for desert when you are on a delivery.

The conditions have been good. We started in Newport with a light breeze (5 to 10kts) on the nose. We motored at about 7kts until about 9:00pm when the breeze moved into the SW and built to about 12kts. The engines were quiet by 10 and we are currently sailing under full main and jib sailing smoothly in 4 to 6 foot seas at about 10kts.

It was pretty darn cold when we left NP but the temp has moderated. It's currently 50 degrees and the heater is off. We've covered about 120 miles so far. We have about 93 miles until the Gulf Stream and about 1050 to Tortola. Breeze is moving more into the West...gotta go ease the sails

-Tom

From Monique: when I post these, I am lacking photos...so I'll add some random sailing ones to keep it fun! You can see who's really driving the Opti. Image of what's to come. Grin!
